a Thanksgiving story
Published: Thu, 11/28/19
Hi
I remember one year when I was in college and like many college kids I didn't have family nearby so when Thanksgiving came around I didn't have a traditional place to go.
So I went to one of those community Thanksgiving dinners that are usually a great thing to help a lot of people.
But I guess this was in a time when things were a bit more loose in terms of how these types of events were prepared....
So it was more like a "pot luck" sort of thing.
Now keep in mind this was in what has become the "hip" part of Eugene Oregon but in the 1990's it was a little different.
You know this was the part of town (at that time before they cleaned it up) where walking around drug dealers would say stuff like "chiva" which was some slang for heroin.
So yeah, I lived in that part of town because even though it was annoying with all that it was the artsy part of town and affordable for students.
It would have been just a normal Thanksgiving but I ate some of this squash soup and got so sick for the next two days!
Now it may have been only one day of throwing up (food poisoning is usually about that long) but I remember it so vividly and knew exactly what it was from even to this day so many decades later.
So when Thanksgiving came up the next year it made me reflect on how gluttonous of a holiday it had become.
I'm all for giving thanks but I guess this was reflecting my empathetic side.
So I fasted that next Thanksgiving as a way of really giving thanks for what I am so grateful for.
And one of those things I'm grateful for is for you reading this and reading the other emails I send ;-).
That's my Thanksgiving story. Wishing you a blessed one.
Best of Health,
Joshua
